Swindon Scoop is a free email newsletter about what's happening in Swindon. This notice explains what information we collect when you sign up or use this website, why we collect it, and what you can do about it. We've kept it in plain English.
Swindon Scoop is the data controller for the personal information described in this notice. That means we decide what information is collected and how it is used.
How to contact us
For anything in this notice, including any of your rights below, email [email protected]. We'll reply within one month.
What we collect
- Your email address, when you sign up to the newsletter.
- Your first name and the area of Swindon you live in, only if you choose to tell us.
- How you use our emails, such as whether an email was opened and which links were clicked. Our email platform records this automatically.
- Anything you send us, such as replies to the newsletter, suggestions or tips.
- Giveaway entries: your name, email address and, if you win, whatever details we need to get your prize to you.
This website itself doesn't use cookies or tracking, and our fonts are hosted here rather than loaded from other companies.
Why we use it
- To send you the newsletter. We rely on your consent, which you give when you sign up. You can withdraw it at any time by clicking "unsubscribe" in any email.
- To make the newsletter better. We look at overall open and click figures to see what readers find useful. This is in our legitimate interests, and we look at the numbers as a whole rather than tracking individuals.
- To reply to you when you get in touch, and to consider what you send us for future issues. We'll never publish your name without asking first.
- To run giveaways: to pick a winner, contact them and arrange the prize.
Who we share it with
We never sell your information, and we never pass it to sponsors or local businesses. We use a small number of trusted services to run Swindon Scoop:
- beehiiv, which stores our subscriber list and sends the newsletter.
- Google Workspace, for our email inbox.
- Cloudflare, which hosts this website.
If you win a giveaway, we'll only share the details needed to get your prize to you (usually just your name) with the business providing it, and we'll tell you first.
Some of these services are based in, or store information in, the United States. Where that happens, the transfer is covered by the protections UK law requires, such as the UK-US data bridge or approved contract terms.
How long we keep it
- Subscribers: for as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep your email address on a "do not email" list only so we don't accidentally email you again.
- Emails you send us: up to two years, then deleted.
- Giveaway entries: deleted three months after the winner is announced.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct it or delete it;
- object to us using it, or ask us to limit how we use it;
- withdraw your consent at any time, by unsubscribing or emailing us.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We'd appreciate the chance to sort it out first, though.
Changes to this notice
If we change how we use your information, we'll update this page and change the date at the top. If it's a big change, we'll tell you in the newsletter.
